I'm one of THOSE moms
Dylan brought home a paperback version of a book they read in school last week. The paperbacks are for the kids to keep and color in.
Let me read it to you:
pg1: A party.
pg2: A cake.
pg3: A doll.
pg4: A cup.
pg5: A party.
What? WHAT?! Words cannot express my frustration. The school district is in the top 100 public schools in America, and yet they cannot seem to get some things straight.
I'll leave the insane school taxes, constant teacher strikes, and ridiculous benefits given to teachers out of this....
Here's my problem (stop laughing): The kindergarten class happens to be the largest the school has had yet- there is a student/teacher ratio of 25:1. The school district refuses to have full day kindergarten; they only have half-days (3hours). As anyone can see, this is not enough time or help to have any one-on-one time with the kids.
There are no letters sent home detailing any type of work done, progress, problems, or comments. The teacher has read a whopping total of two books so far this year. TWO BOOKS!!! There has been no homework sent home, but I have received four fund raisers. (Wanna buy a 100% recycled newspaper pencil which comes in seven scents? A "Smencil anyone?) They have "free play" in a three-hour day. They have snack time one hour after they get there.
I can tell you with definite certainty why some kids can't read by the time they graduate.
Yeah, my high horse is standing right here, and I'll ride it back into the sunset in a minute. Three weeks into Dylan's first year of school, and I'm already bitching.
Hire more teachers; make school days longer; send home some homework; read some books with actual sentences in it.
Giddyup.

Hmmmm. Mini-me's at a pre-school for 3 hours every day. 3 classroom assistants. They all say she's very bright but because of her birth date she can't start school until Jan. 2009. The requirement the pre-school has is that she can count to 10. She can log-in on a computer when it asks for her name and password. 10 isn't a problem. After da-da, bo-bo, more et al her first 3 words were broccoli, helicopter and corn. I WAS a tad disappointed with corn. Fifteen more months. I'm just going to have to find out what her first year should be and teach her to read and write myself before she turns into a 4 yr old sulky hooligan with a drink problem.
corn? She's got something with farms, doesn't she? I seem to remember something about cows from way back. Start her early- Dylan's past the drink problem. He's graduated to coke. Jordan's screwed.
I'm so glad my kids are grown. So are their teachers, as daddy was always a pain in the ass...telling them what they were doing wrong, how to teach, etc. Actually, I suppose the kids are glad they are grown, as well. Daddy may have been somewhat of an embarrassment.
Jock- it's hard being right all the time, isn't it?
